What Are Grants & How Can They Help?

Grants are funds provided by government agencies, nonprofits, and private organizations to help businesses thrive. In the assisted living industry, grants have the potential to help cover:

πŸ’° Property purchases or renovations (making homes ADA-compliant, safety upgrades)
πŸ’° Staff training and certification (required for caregivers and administrators)
πŸ’° Equipment and technology upgrades (medical beds, security systems, software)
πŸ’° Licensing and compliance costs (state-mandated regulations)

The key to success? Using a Grant Writing Template to help get the funds you need.

1. Federal & State Government Grants

Government grants are one of the largest sources of funding, but they can also be highly competitive. Here’s where to start:

πŸ” Grants.gov

βœ… Supports businesses focused on healthcare innovation and community development

πŸ” State-Specific Grant Programs

βœ… Your state may offer grants for assisted living startups and senior care facilities
βœ… Search your state’s economic development website for funding opportunities

πŸ’‘ Pro Tip: Government grants often require detailed documentation. Be prepared with a strong business plan, financial projections, and a clear mission statement.

Nonprofits and private foundations also offer grants specifically for senior care, healthcare, and small businesses. Some of the best places to look include:

πŸ” AARP Foundation Grants

πŸ” Local Community Foundations

βœ… Many counties and cities have grant programs for small businesses in healthcare
βœ… Search for community foundations in your local area to find funding near you

πŸ’‘ Pro Tip: Nonprofits and foundations prioritize businesses with a strong social mission. In your application, highlight how your facility improves the lives of seniors.

3. Corporate & Private Business Grants

Many large corporations support small businesses through grant programs, especially for healthcare and senior care businesses.

πŸ” FedEx Small Business Grant

βœ… Awards up to $50,000 in funding
βœ… Ideal for businesses looking to scale and innovate

πŸ” Comcast RISE Grants

βœ… Supports minority- and women-owned businesses
βœ… Provides cash grants, marketing resources, and technology support

πŸ” Google.org Impact Challenge

βœ… Funds businesses using technology to improve community services
βœ… Great for assisted living businesses investing in smart healthcare solutions

πŸ’‘ Pro Tip: Many corporate grants prioritize businesses owned by women, minorities, or veterans. If you qualify, be sure to emphasize this in your application!

4. Grants for Veterans & Minority Business Owners

If you’re a veteran, woman, or minority entrepreneur, there are special grant programs designed to help you launch and grow your assisted living business.

πŸ” Veteran-Owned Business Grants

βœ… StreetShares Foundation – Provides funding and mentorship for veteran entrepreneurs
βœ… Warrior Rising – Helps veterans start and scale their businesses

πŸ” Minority Business Grants

βœ… National Association for the Self-Employed (NASE) – Grants up to $4,000 for small businesses

πŸ’‘ Pro Tip: Many of these grants require a compelling personal story. Share your passion for assisted living and how your background uniquely positions you for success.

5. How to Apply & Increase Your Chances of Winning

Applying for grants takes time, but a strong application can set you apart. Follow these steps:

βœ… Step 1: Find the Right Grant – Only apply for grants that match your business type and goals.
βœ… Step 2: Prepare Your Business Plan – Most grants require a detailed business plan and financial projections.
βœ… Step 3: Write a Strong Grant Proposal – Explain why your business deserves funding and how it will positively impact seniors.
βœ… Step 4: Meet All Deadlines – Many grants have strict submission dates—stay organized!

hey friend it is Brandon Gustafson with Assisted Living investing uh welcome to the channel today at Assisted Living investing I help beginners like you launch their Assisted Living business in the next 12 months excited to have you uh here with me we're going to be talking about a topic that I see a lot it's where to find grants um I have for those of you that have followed me for any period of time have kind of been keeping up to dat on uh the progress that I've been making on my grant and we

00:00:31
just did a video that we released yesterday uh so make sure you go and watch that uh where I did a tour of the facility and as you can see exactly what my facility looks like but also the types of work that we're doing in that house using this grant that we have and uh want to give you a little bit of insight into that but as as people are are looking at this they want to know more about grants and how that works I wanted to show you reliable sources where you can go to actually find grants

00:00:59
so you know know exactly how to do this uh you can also grab the free grant writing template that I get a give away it just go down we're going to have a ticker here go to Assisted Living investing. netg grrs you can get access to that free underwriting template uh that will help you out along your journey as well and then yesterday we actually just released our grant funding foundations course where you can go and grab that that's assisted living investing. netg for grant funding foundations uh

00:01:28
it's a course I put together that kind of goes through the entire process uh what it looks like how grants work um how you can write a really good Grant proposal how you can manage those grants um through the entire process and and be successful so again that's going to be Assisted Living investing. netg we'll have a link um here at the end of the video so you don't have to remember it right now but uh go check that out um now with all of that said and I forgot to share my screen so you had that um go to uh

00:01:58
Assisted Living investing. net for that free grant writing template I want to give you a little bit of background on who I am and why I'm qualified to talk with you about this uh because there's a lot of people out there um including in my Facebook group and I try to stay on top of this uh but a lot of people that don't know what they're talking about with grants or there are scams and so I want you to be aware of that but my background who I am um I own and operate two assisted living facilities I have

00:02:23
done this since 2020 I do it out of state I live in Utah I have one facility in Colorado one in Idaho and we were actually just in Colorado this past week which is how uh we did that uh that that tour video of the facility I've secured over one and a half million in SBA funding I have obtained over $1.2 million in grant funding um through throughout the process of owning my facilities I operate out of state as I mentioned and I have a masters in healthcare administration have worked for a lot of nonprofits have done

00:02:52
multi-million dollar grants as an analytics expert on those uh so I'm very familiar with the grant process with working inside of a assisted living in the healthcare industry I have a lot of really good solid experience there so that's that's who I am uh now the first thing that I want to talk about as we're talking here about where to find reliable sources where to go and find those grants is to go to reliable sources you need to be very aware that there are scams out there there are

00:03:22
people that are trying to get your information so they can sell it or or whatever spam you with other things um log in using your information for things um just be extremely careful of scams that are out there including in my own Facebook group uh we try to stay on top of it but please be very very wary of those opportunities and use only reliable sources we're going to get into that in this video um but you have to be extremely careful with any of the information that you share and who you

00:03:51
share it with because when you are doing grants you are sharing sensitive information you're sharing you know your name social security number um EIN numbers the business the business name creation date oftentimes you're sharing things like your operating agreement or the Ein letter um or just a lot of very personal things sometimes bank account information because you got to get the funds to come into your bank account there's a lot of things that are out there that you just have to be very very

00:04:17
careful make sure you are talking to reliable sources um so I can't stress that enough it is so important for you to to to do that now before I go a little bit further I just want to remind people if you are new here type in newbie down below would love to uh hear from you uh just see who's new I love seeing uh new people that that find the videos and then excuse me the other thing that I wanted to point out is we will do questions here at the end so I'll try to check in uh and and over

00:04:44
there it's not on the screen that I have up right now but um we'll have definitely some time at the end for questions so please um just you know type in questions as we go along and if you're watching this after the fact type them in anyways in the comments down below and I will get to those um in the comments for you or potentially create new videos for you um all right now let's get into some some real resources some reliable resources for where you can actually go and get grants um I think I'm going to

00:05:14
go through five of them here um if I remember correctly I planned this last week before I went on my trip so I'm pretty sure it's f um but grants.gov is a is a big one um these are government grants they're and it's for all of the different government agencies that are out there um inside of the US government now if you're in different countries I know there's a few of you that watch that are in Canada I don't know if there's an equivalent to this um up in Canada I would imagine there is but I'm

00:05:42
not familiar with that that process if you're in Europe I I don't know what those are this is specific to um to the United States and a lot of these resources are so I apologize I don't have resources that are um International but um I think you might find some opportunities especially with some of these other resources there might be something out there that that that works for you if not there's going to be something similar inside of your country so grants.gov these are federal grants

00:06:08
um and they for all the the different government agencies that are out there the ones that you would specifically want to be looking at if you're in the Assisted Living World are going to be with the NIH which is the National Institute of Health I believe and HUD which is the Housing and Urban Development I want to say um those are actually two really good agencies for you to be looking for grants for assisted living in the grant funding foundations course we actually go through um grants.gov in in great detail

00:06:37
and how to work through that process how to find grants and how to apply for them there in that so if you want some help doing that go check out the course but uh you would want to be looking for opportunities that are kind of in this realm and then pursuing those now when you are working with a Federal grant there's different level of vetting that goes into it uh different requirements you have to be aware of and that is government related you're going to have to deal with with some of these things

00:07:04
so that's something that you definitely want to be aware of uh going into it that it will be a little bit more complicated than uh what you would see in other places but um Grand sua great resource for you there sam.gov this is actually another uh opportunity that that is federal um that has federal grants this one um these will require a duns number and I can't remember duns has an acronym I can't remember what it what it stands for um the grants that we have received um they came through arpa

00:07:36
funding down to the States and then they are administered through sam.gov um at least I have to have it dun's number and I have to kind of show and and Report things through sam.gov there are other grant opportunities on sam.gov as well um so there's a lot out there Grant type of Grant government types of Grants uh for you to look at things uh the dun's number will actually kind of walk you through the process in the grant funding foundations's course to kind of give you a little bit of an overview what that

00:08:07
looks like and how to go into that so again go check that out if you're interested um and it's also oftentimes grants on sam.gov are reserve for entities that have had grants in the past they are um oftentimes promoting they they'll even email you once you created that duns number and you're working through a grant they'll say Hey you know here's another one this one's kind of similar you want are you interested in this one over here it's not like the most curated

00:08:34
version of grant opportunities for you but it is something that I get emails um regularly I would say at least monthly if not possibly even weekly um that say hey here's an opportunity for you I interested in this one I've been so overwhelmed with everything that I can't find I just don't have time to really look into it right now but there are opportunities that are out there but there are specifically most often for entities that have had grants in the past and have kind of a track record of

00:09:02
working through those grants Sam Dogo it's another good one good reliable source Grant gopher.com so this is one and in the grant funding foundations course we go through this in in great detail I have used Grant gopher uh a lot in the past I actually had a a grant writing business for a period of time uh five or six years ago and uh Grant gopher is where I went to go look for opportunities a lot of times these are private grants there are some government grants in there like small local government things uh and there's free

00:09:33
and paid tiers so I kind of walk you through that in grant funding foundation so you can see exactly what it looks like and how it works but it's a great um resource the free version of it I think is capable of handling a lot of people's um situations and uh really um I found it to I mean it's not the the prettiest website um but it's functional and it gives you a lot of really good detail has some good links lets you go in and find Opportunities and find contacts and things like that really

00:10:01
really good website for you to be looking at and using to help you find grant opportunities and these are real grants these are these are opportunities that while they are private um are real opportunities um that that people are putting out there so that's one for you to be aware of granto for.com grantwatch decom so this one is I'm not super familiar with this one but I was doing some research for this video and I was actually really impressed with this one this is one I want to dig into

00:10:27
a little bit more so if uh for those of you that are interested in grantwatch decom just type in grantwatch um down below so I can see what you know who's interested in looking at that but uh from these ones have government grants but they are at a federal a state and a local government level so you can get all three of them grants.gov and sam.gov are often times most they're almost always at a federal level um they may come down to State administered federal grants but they are administered at a

00:10:55
federal level grantwatch decom is going to get down to federal state and local government and for a lot of you that are looking to do this with assisted living and looking for grant opportunities um it it might be one of your Best Bets because I think um government grants government funded grants are a little bit easier they're less competitive um their selection process is a little bit more clear than private grants and so I think these are really good opportunities plus they are willing to

00:11:24
really put back into the community so these are these are really good opportunities for you to look at Grant watch also has private grants um with privately funded um types of individuals or entities that are providing Grant funds so it's a really good option for there because I'm not super familiar with it I don't know if there's free or paid tiered versions there but uh something for you to check into ground.com and then this one is another one that I found this one seemed a little more

00:11:52
confusing um and when you look at Grant go in the beginning you'll be like I don't know that I understand this um but this one by candid.com Foundation Center by candid.com um looked like a cleaner website but the interface did not seem quite as intuitive as what I found a grant goer but on here you're going to find private foundations public Charities and corporate funders so these are um this is not just grants these are actually other opportunities for people to fund you through Grant like opportunities um

00:12:27
there are grant opportunities there but there are also um like Charities and things like that that are um that are donating funds for opportunities so this is another one that I I think you could look at it's a real Source um Foundation Center by candid.com uh again not super familiar with that one uh and I would say of the five here that we've talked about so far um probably my my least favorite but you know things can improve so I think it's worth checking them out because they are

00:12:53
a real resource for sure so now if you need some guidance as you're going through this and I've talked about this a few times throughout the video go check out the grant fundings Foundation grant funding foundations course uh assisted living investing. netg for grant funding foundations new course we just dropped it yesterday has a ton of information a ton of videos uh there's a few different tiers for if you need some extra guidance or things like that so go check that out um that that

00:13:18
landing page that you go to there just kind of goes through the entire course what's in it what's included uh what you can expect um and and how I can help you out through that through the course and finding grants uh WR writing a grant proposal obtaining the grant funds and managing that Grant and then kind of preparing for post Grant life what does that look like because you have to be prepared for Audits and there's a lot of things that go into that um I have been working with grants for organizations

00:13:45
for how long um probably since 2015 I want to say um uh and have a lot of experience lot a lot of that as large like very like multi-million hundred million dollar grants um for large nonprofit organizations uh working as an analytic expert use that to to gain a lot of knowledge on how to Grant WR have taken a lot of courses on it myself professional training personally that I'm sharing with you here in the course and then also my experience as a small business owner and obtaining grants which I've obtained one over $1.2

00:14:18
million in grant funding so all of that you kind of get inside of this course to kind of help you out through the process understand what it is what it looks like how it works how to find grants um you know today been talking about where some of those good reliable resources are to find grants how to actually navigate those sites and how to find that opportunity how to pursue it how to navigate their Grant proposal process so you know exactly how you need to write your Grant proposal so you can submit it

00:14:47
to them what quarterly reports and monthly reports might look like for you and how that entire process is going to work so everything there that I just kind of went over is included in the grant funding foundations course again that's Assisted Living investing. netg go check that out um if you need just some free help go to assisted Liv investing. netg grants and you can get that free writing template there for you all right let's see if there's any questions here um if there are please go
